American Legion Baseball Scholarships and Awards
Each year scholarships and awards are presented for players who best
represent leadership, sportsmanship, high moral character and scholastic
achievement. Listed below are 2003 award and scholarship winners.
GEORGE
W. RULON AMERICAN LEGION PLAYER OF THE YEAR
By virtue of a special arrangement with officials of the National Baseball
Hall of Fame and Museum, an American Legion Baseball player is selected
each year as the "George W. Rulon Player of the Year." The selection
is made on the basis of integrity, mental attitude, cooperation, citizenship,
sportsmanship, scholastic aptitude, and general good conduct. George
W. Rulon was the National Staff Coordinator who operated the American
Legion Baseball Program for 25 years, until his retirement in 1986.
Recipient of this award receives a total of $4,000 in scholarships.
The American Legion awards a $1,000 scholarship and The Quaker Oats
Company, makers of Gatorade, award an additional $3,000.

FELLER PITCHING AWARD
American
Legion Baseball's first graduate to be elected into the Baseball Hall
of Fame at Cooperstown, New York was Robert Feller. Despite an active
business career, Feller has continued to maintain a keen interest in
the program. The National Americanism Commission salutes his participation
by the presentation of this award. The selection is to the player striking
out the most batters in Regional and National competition. Listed below

DR. IRVIN L. (CLICK) COWGER RBI MEMORIAL AWARD
American
Legion Baseball lost a dynamic leader during the 1970 season. In his
memory, the National Americanism Commission established the Dr. Irvin
L. (Click) Cowger RBI Memorial Award. The recipient of this annual award,
provided by the Department of Kansas, is that American Legion Baseball
player who is credited with the most runs batted in by the official
scorers at the respective Regional tournament and World Series. Listed

WILLIAMS MEMORIAL LEADERSHIP AWARD
State Adjutant Jack
Williams led the American Legion, Department of North Dakota, for 49
years prior to his death in 1967. His great love for the game of baseball
was evident in his early efforts to establish American Legion Baseball
as a youth citizenship-training program of The American Legion. Aware
that proper adult leadership was an important ingredient of a successful
program, Williams constantly encouraged qualified men to work in the
program. To perpetuate Williams' memory, The American Legion, Department
of North Dakota, annually presents this award to the manager and coach
of the National Championship Team as representatives of the adult leadership
Williams stressed during his lifetime. Listed below are those adults

The
American Legion Baseball Scholarship
The American Legion has established
a nationwide baseball scholarship. The American Legion Baseball
Scholarship has a broad eligibility base and does not require
participation in Regional or World Series tournaments.
Applications are provided annually to each Team Manager.
Eligibility extends to players
who are listed on teams affiliated with with local posts of
The American Legion.
Scholarships are in the amount of $1,000 per American Legion
Department. Guidelines for selection place emphasis on leadership,
citizenship, character, and financial need.
The final selection of the Department's (state) recipient is
determined by by The American Legion Baseball Committee. Annually
The National Americanism Commission of The American Legion awards
$70,000.

Scholarship Winner ** American Legion Player of the Year
Since 1986
Stokely-Van Camp, the maker of Gatorade, has sponsored an annual
Leadership Award. Gatorade provides $10,000 in scholarships
to nine deserving American Legion players. Players are selected
from the nominated Department (State) Winners and are award
a $1,000 scholarship. One player is then selected from the eight
Regional Award Winner and is name as The American Legion Player
of the Year. The George W. Rulon, American Legion Player of
the Year receives an additional $2,000 scholarship. The Player
of the Year also receives an expense paid trip to the annual
American Legion National Convention and to the National Baseball
Hall of Fame in Cooperstown where the recipient is honor at
during the National Baseball Hall of Fame Game. Since this sponsorship
began, nearly 150 American Legion Baseball players have furthered
their education thanks to Gatorade.
